Inle Lake

[Nyaungshwe] [On the lake] [Floating villages] [Monasteries]

The highlight of any visit to Myanmar is the outrageously beautiful Inle Lake, with its serene waters, floating gardens, island monasteries, longtail boat rides and quaint water-borne villages. High hills rim the lake on both sides. The lakeshore and lake islands bear dozens of villages on stilts, mostly inhabited by the Intha people (Intha means 'sons of the lake'). Inle's most unusual feature is its extraordinary 'leg rowing fishermen', who have developed an original , eccentric method of rowing with one leg. The lake is dotted with patches of floating gardens, which are built-up from strips of water hyacinth and mud, on which many crops are cultivated.
