Around Lhasa

In the area around Lhasa are many monasteries, most notably Sera and Drepung. Drepung was once the world's largest monastery, with a population of up to 10.000 monks. The Kora around Drepung climbs up to around 3900m and provides awesome views over the Lhasa valley. Sera Monastery was, along with Drepung, one of Lhasa's two great Gelugpa monasteries. Sera Monastery is particularly worth a visit in the afternoon when debating is usually held in the monastery's debating courtyard.
