Pandas (Chengdu)

About 12km north of Chengdu is the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base. This research station and breeding ground for both giant and lesser pandas (red pandas) has been in operation since 1990. The Research Basis is on of the important centres in China for the captive conservation of giant pandas. The current goal is to increase the captive population of giant pandas. The ultimate goal is to reintroduce giant pandas to the wild. Pandas in China are found only in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. In total there are fewer than 1000, of which 80% are distributed within the territory of Sichuan province.
